Old Masters in the Frans Hals Museum.

The complete collection of old masters at the Frans Hals Museum comprises around 600 paintings, and a large part is on permanent display. Others are on loan, being restored or in storage. Other exhibits include furniture, cabinets, chests, benches, ceramics, glass and silverware.

The earliest paintings in the Frans Hals Museum date from the beginning of the 16th century. These works have biblical and mythological scenes as their subject matter and were commissioned for the decoration of altars, in monasteries, churches and chapels.
The 16th century painters - Jan van Scorel, Maerten van Heemskerck, Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem – were the trailblazers for the world-famous Dutch painting which followed in the Dutch Golden Age.
